Protect your car from martens

Every year in Italy there are many cases of damage to vehicles caused by the bite of martens. The culprit is the Eurasian marten, which is quite comfortable around humans and uses the car’s engine compartment as a refuge: here you can hide from other animals but also accumulate food supplies. If you often travel and during the night, park your car at different places, you are particularly at risk. The reason? Wars for the territory between martens trying to claim it for themselves. The marten bites are a natural behavior, more evident during the mating season.

However, you simply do not have to tolerate the bite of martens, as they can not only cause considerable damage, but can also lead to accidents. If the half-caps, cooling hoses, or cables are hit, the vehicle may overheat or become unusable. Although the towing can be free for members of a car club, insurance rarely covers the actual damage. After the damage of a marten or early signs of a marten, the engine should be cleaned. Better yet, find out more about the defense methods against martens before it’s too late.

An effective, though tedious, method is to install custom-made cracking plastic pipes through which to pass the cables. For cables connected to the catalytic converter, these should be made of aluminum, which resists the heat. The simplest thing is still to install a metal wire underneath the engine or a set of spikes in the engine compartment. Even more powerful are high-voltage and ultrasonic devices.

Ultrasonic Method
Ultrasounds are an effective method of protection from martens. These devices emit a high frequency not perceptible by man but rejects animals. For the ultrasonic method to be effective, you should look for a device with a sound emission level of at least 100dB (C) and with frequency modulation; Otherwise it will not work as a deterrent of martens and they will continue to use the vehicle as a shelter. Good devices cost about 100 euros. When dealing with this expense you have to keep in mind that the cheaper versions are not worth the money spent. The installation should be made in such a way that the sound can be reflected on the surfaces beneath the bonnet. Through frequency modulation, the tone changes regularly so that the martens do not simply get used to it. Ideally, it is best to use a combination of ultrasound and high voltage methods.
